Repair Guide: 2002 Ford Mustang - Engine Overheating
Tools and Materials Required:
- Ratchet & Socket Set
- Screwdrivers
- New Thermostat
- New Radiator Cap
- New Antifreeze/Coolant
- Drain Pan
- Shop Rags/Cloths
- Distilled Water
Step-by-step Guide:
-
Step 1: Drain the Coolant
First, make sure the engine is cool. Place a drain pan under the radiator's drain plug and remove it. Allow all the coolant to drain out.
-
Step 2: Remove the Old Thermostat
Locate the thermostat housing by tracing the upper radiator hose to where it connects to the engine. Remove the bolts that secure the housing, then remove the old thermostat.
-
Step 3: Install the New Thermostat
Install the new thermostat into the housing with the spring-side facing into the engine. Replace the housing and secure it with the bolts.
-
Step 4: Replace the Radiator Cap
If the radiator cap is old or damaged, it should also be replaced. Simply remove the old cap and snap on a new one.
-
Step 5: Refill the Coolant
Close the drain plug and fill the radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water. Start the car and let it run to circulate the coolant and check for leaks.
Warning:
Always ensure the engine is sufficiently cool before working on it. Engine fluids are toxic, dispose of them correctly. If problems persist, consult an automotive professional.
